Submitting Material for Publication
Writers' Guidelines
Scottish Islands Explorer is the UK's only magazine solely
devoted to exploring the islands of Scotland. It is published bi-monthly
in full colour and is composed of 52 pages.
Description of Magazine, Content and Character
Each issue contains high quality, in-depth, topical articles about the Scottish islands. Subject matter is wide ranging including articles on: wildlife, environmental issues, archaeology, history, cultural development, lifestyles, travel, and current affairs. Within each issue we also carry articles that focus in detail on specific areas or islands.
We also have regular sections, which include news from the Scottish islands, people profiles, places to visit, book and video reviews.
We would prefer (if possible) for writers to be speaking from personal experience and that all stated facts are accurate. We appreciate clear, concise writing similar to that found in good quality newspapers. Submitted articles should be between approximately 500-3000 words. Book and video reviews should be approximately 800 words.
Submission of articles/photographs/drawings etc.
We prefer articles to be submitted either via e-mail or on floppy disc/CD in Microsoft Word format. We can, however, also accept typed manuscripts, preferably the original copy. If submitting a photocopy, all script should be legible.
The heading at the top of the first page must include your name, address and telephone number and the title of the article. The header for all subsequent pages should carry your name, the title of the article and the page number. Articles of more than one page should be stapled at the top left-hand corner.
Relevant photography, maps and drawings may be included, although we reserve the right to substitute our own photographic material if the quality of submitted photographs is poor. We prefer the submission of transparencies (slides) or JPEG/TIFF/PDF files either e.mailed or on CD/floppy, but we can also deal with high quality photographic prints if necessary. Digital pictures should be 300 dpi and CMYK format, landscape size approx. 210mm x 150mm, portrait size approx. 300 x 210mm.
Scottish Islands Explorer is published on the 18th day
of alternate months, (February, April, June, August, October, and
December). The deadline for the submission of articles is 8 weeks
prior to publication date. Post your article and any related material
by regular first class mail as, given our location, carrier services
are not as efficient.
Fees
Payment is currently set at 3.5 p per published word and £5 per published photograph.
